BARRETT's NAME ON IT. --IT MUST BE HAND DELIVERED TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE. --This project is only for College Now students who have passed ALL other subjects except chemistry. --To complete this project, above qualifying students may use the Internet, your text book, or any other chemistry books. --The project is divided into three parts numbered below. (You must complete all three parts.) (a) Type an essay of not less than 400 words explaining what chemistry is and how it affects our daily life. In your explanation, give examples of chemistry at work in nature. Your essay will be graded on content and structure. (b) Explain the relationship between orbitals, energy levels and electrons: then write the electron configuration of sodium(Na) and magnesium(Mg). There are examples of electron configuration of elements in Chapter One of your text book. (c) Describe an atom in terms of the particles it contains. Explain what is atomic number, atomic mass and isotope. Give an example of an isotope. (a) State how elements in the periodic table are arranged. State the reason why some elements in the periodic table are called noble gases, alkali and alkaline earth metal. (b) State some properties of elements in groups of the periodic table. (c) In your own words state the reason why the periodic table is so important to scientists. (a) Explan what organic chemistry is and how it relates to life on Earth. This should be an essay of 150 words or more. (b) State what are functional groups and give six examples of functional groups.
